10 Tips to Help Clients Relax During a Photoshoot
If I had a rand for every time someone said “We’re so awkward in front of the camera,” I’d be editing from a yacht in the Maldives. The truth is — most people do feel nervous before a shoot. But with the right approach, you can turn even the shyest couple into relaxed, natural pros.
Here are 10 tried-and-tested tips I use to help my clients feel comfortable, confident, and even have fun during a session:
1. Break the Ice Immediately
The camera shouldn’t be the first thing they meet — you should. Start the shoot with easy conversation. Ask how their day has been, how they met (for couples), or compliment something — even something small, like their shoes or smile.
“You guys look amazing — I already know this shoot’s going to be good!”
It sets a light tone and immediately shifts the vibe from formal photoshoot to fun hangout.
2. Play Music
Bring a small speaker and play a chill playlist or ask what kind of music they love. Music fills awkward silences and helps people feel more at ease. Bonus: letting them choose a song gives them a sense of control and comfort.
3. Give Simple, Fun Prompts (Not Just Poses)
Instead of stiff directions like “turn your head 30 degrees,” give playful prompts that create movement and real emotion:
- “Whisper what you had for breakfast in your sexiest voice.”
- “Walk toward me like you’re in a wine farm commercial.”
- “Tickle her, just a little!”
These moments lead to real laughter, natural smiles, and those in-between shots that people actually frame.
4. Be Chill Yourself
Your energy is contagious. If you’re relaxed, they will be too. Keep your vibe friendly, patient, and low-pressure. A warm smile, some gentle humour, and letting go of rigid expectations will help them do the same.
5. Show Sneak Peeks Mid-Shoot
Halfway through, show them a few shots on your camera. This helps build trust — they’ll see they do look good, and it boosts their confidence for the rest of the session.
6. Encourage Natural Interaction
Instead of saying “stand there and smile,” invite them to:
- Hug from behind
- Hold hands and spin
- Slow dance like no one’s watching
These actions give their hands something to do and shift focus from the camera to each other — which is where the magic happens.
7. Take Little Breaks
Especially during longer sessions, take short breaks. A sip of water, a moment in the shade, or just a breather helps people feel refreshed and ready again.
8. Avoid Over-Correcting
Try not to nitpick every little hand or foot movement. Too much correcting can make clients feel like they’re “doing it wrong.” Instead, focus on what’s working:
“That hand placement is perfect — just keep doing that!”
9. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
Remind your clients this shoot isn’t about perfect poses — it’s about capturing connection, love, and laughter.
“I want this to feel like a fun date, not a stiff photoshoot.”
People relax when they know the pressure is off.
10. End on a High Note
Finish with something playful or silly — like a piggyback ride, a twirl, or a running hug. Laugh, thank them, and let them know they nailed it. Then, follow up with a sneak peek soon after to keep the excitement alive!
Final Thoughts
The best photos happen when people feel seen, safe, and silly. By leading with warmth and curiosity, you’re not just taking photos — you’re creating an experience. And that’s what people remember (and rave about).
